The 5th West African Organic Conference Held At the University of Ghana, Legon – Accra between 12th- 15th November, 2019.
Theme: Organic Agriculture: Life For All
The 4 days biennial conference started with opening ceremony and scientific sessions on Tuesday 12th Nov, 2019. Welcome address was done by the Chairman of EOA-PG, Dr. Ken Fening and the scientific Sessions by Prof. Yemi Akinbamijo, Executive Director Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), Dr. Noah Admatey, Dr. Irene Kadzere, Dr. Christian Schader and Dipl.-Ing. Beate Huber of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and Ingrid Prem Project Leader of the GIZ sector project Sustainable Agriculture German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
The official opening of the Exhibition ground was done by WAfrONet Secretary and NOARA coordinator, Dr Olugbenga AdeOluwa after the opening ceremony at the Department of Economics, University of Ghana, Legon, Accra after which a cocktail was done at the exhibition ground.
Day 2 also started with welcome/opening ceremony with addresses by President of Ecological Organic Agriculture Platform of Ghana (EOAP-G), Chair of the West African Organic Network (WAfrONet), Head of Agricultural Division, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Nigeria, Head of Agriculture and Food Security Division of African Union and Head of Market Oriented Agriculture Programme (MOAP) of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) including the Deputy Minister of Agriculture (crops) at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). There was a beautiful cultural performance during the Opening ceremony after which the official launching of the maiden edition of African Journal of Organic Agriculture and Ecology (AJOAE) was done by NOARA coordinator and the speakers at the Opening ceremony of the 5th WAOC, Accra after the welcome addresses.
Day 3 featured plenary sessions by FAO representative, Ghana, University of Ghana and French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) while break-out sessions in Innovative technology, Crop production/Soil fertility and Agro-ecological systems featuring film, presentations and discussion as well as Farmers Track/INOFO.
The closing ceremony summary, resolution, voting for next conference and remarks were done on the evening of day 3 at the Economics Department of the University of Ghana after which the conference declaration /communique was presented by Dr Olugbenga AdeOluwa.
Day 4 (Friday 15th) featured field visitation to selected organic farms in Ghana as well as the WAfrONet General Assembly.
